His relationship with books as handmade objects began at age 14 when he began writing journals. Art and journal writing gradually converged until he began binding blank books for his own use. He found in the process a compelling technical challenge married to a rich field for creative expression.

In 1998 he began plans to open a hand book bindery. Acquiring skills, equipment, working capital and a working plan consumed most of the following years. In May 2002 came the purchase of the one person bindery Hugh Stump Fine Bindings on the owner's retirement.
